Forbes counts what they kept. We count what they built.
$15.5TMarket value the companies of 50 founders have built beyond their book equity and beyond everything the founders hold.
It is held by the companies’ other owners: pension funds, index funds, 401(k)s, employees and individual savers, in the U.S. and abroad. That’s equal to about 20% of the total market value of all 3,652 U.S. public companies. Forbes puts the 50 founders’ combined net worth at $3.10T.
“Somebody needs to make a list where they rank people by how much wealth they’ve created for other people.”
Jeff Bezos, New York Times DealBook Summit, December 2024 · Read the coverage
So we built it. His own math, Amazon’s value minus his stake, gave about $2.1 trillion in 2024. Ours is stricter and gives $1.76T.
The top of the list.
Each figure is market value the company has created above every dollar of capital on its books, minus everything its founders hold.
All 50 founders.
Tap any name to see the full calculation, each source, and its date. Use Sort by to reorder the list; each founder keeps their rank number.
Founders’ share: of the value each company has built beyond its book equity, the part its founders hold. The rest belongs to other owners. Nvidia’s 4.2% means Jensen Huang’s team holds about $1 for every $23 that belongs to other people. Lower means more went to others.

Builders emeriti.
Founders who ran their companies for years and have since stepped away. Because they no longer serve the company, we show them separately rather than ranking them.
Just outside the top 50: George Roberts ($27.4B), Henry Kravis ($27.4B), Michael Saylor ($25.3B), Thomas Peterffy ($19.9B), Marc Rowan ($12.5B), Richard Fairbank ($7.1B).
How we count.
One formula, applied the same way to every company, with every discretionary assumption chosen to shrink the headline number, not inflate it. The math is mechanical; calling the result "built for others" is our thesis.
Built for others = market cap − book equity − everything the founders hold.
Market value added
Market cap minus book equity is equity market value added (equity MVA), a standard finance measure. It is the equity-level version; the enterprise-level version also adds debt to both sides. We use it as a proxy for value created beyond the capital on the books. Book equity is the accounting value of shareholders' capital: what investors paid in plus profits kept, less losses, dividends and buybacks, after other accounting adjustments. None of it counts as created. Negative book equity is treated as zero.
Why subtract book equity?
If investors put $100 into a company and it is now worth $150, it created $50, not $150. Book equity is that $100, plus profits the company kept instead of paying out. Subtracting it keeps us from counting investors' own money as value created.
A snapshot, not a history
Every figure is today's market value as of the dated close. It is not a running total of wealth created over the company's life, and it rises and falls with the market each week.
What founders hold
For each founder we subtract whichever is larger: their stake at today's price, or their entire Forbes net worth. Net worth includes shares they already sold, homes and other companies, so it overstates what they took from this one. This deliberately over-attributes founder wealth to the company, so “built for others” is a conservative lower bound under our method.
Co-founders off the list
Living co-founders whom Forbes does not count as billionaires are each charged $1 billion, the billionaire threshold. Co-founders who left the company are charged too.
Who is ranked
A founder or founding operator on the Forbes real-time billionaires list who still serves the company as an executive, chair or director. The company must be U.S.-headquartered and U.S.-listed.
Shared credit
Co-founders of the same company share its figure and its rank, the way a team shares a title. Totals count each company once.
Founders' share
Everything the founders hold, divided by that plus the value built for others. It is the same ratio as "others got per $1 kept," written as a percent: a 4% share means others hold about $24 for every $1 the founders do. Where we charge a founder's full Forbes net worth, it includes homes, other companies and shares already sold, so this share can overstate what founders hold in the company. It never understates it.
Employees
Each company's headcount from its latest annual report, dated on every row. These are the jobs that exist at the company today. We don't estimate jobs at suppliers or partners. Amazon alone accounts for about half the total.
Income taxes paid
Cash income taxes each company paid over its last five reported fiscal years, from the cash-flow statement's supplemental disclosure (SEC tags IncomeTaxesPaidNet or IncomeTaxesPaid). Worldwide, not just U.S. federal. It is cash actually paid, net of refunds, not the accounting tax expense. SpaceX and DoorDash don't report a full five-year figure we could verify, so they are left out of the total.
Paid to employees in stock
Stock-based compensation from each company's cash-flow statement, summed over its last five reported fiscal years. This is accounting expense at grant-date value, not what employees ultimately realized. This stock is already inside book equity, so it lowers our main figure; we don't count it twice.
Dates
Market caps are the Oct 23, 2026 close. Book equity is each company's latest quarterly report or earnings release. Net worths are Forbes real-time figures from Aug–Oct 2026, dated on every row. The list is updated every Saturday using Friday's closing prices.
Who's not here, and why.
The rules are applied the same way to everyone, and they leave out some of the strongest names in the story.
Where every number comes from.
Everything here is public. Open any row on the list and each figure links to the document it came from.
Download everything we use: companies.csv · people.csv · jobs.csv · stock pay · taxes · sources.json · data.json (every computed figure)
No private data, no estimates of jobs at suppliers, no guesses at what employees earned. Where a source and a filing disagree, we use the filing. Spot an error? Tell us at @trillionlist on X.
Questions we expect.
Who exactly are the "others"?
Everyone who owns these companies' shares besides their founders. That ownership is concentrated. The Federal Reserve estimates that the wealthiest 1% of U.S. households hold 50.9% of all corporate stock and mutual fund shares held by households, the top 10% hold 88.1%, and the bottom half hold 0.6% (Q2 2026). Foreign investors hold about 20% of U.S. corporate stock through portfolio holdings, and about a third of publicly traded U.S. stock counting larger stakes. Retirement accounts and pensions, including 401(k)s and IRAs, hold about a third of publicly traded U.S. stock. So "others" means pension funds, retirement savers, index funds, employees and foreign investors, weighted toward the wealthy. Two more limits: market value can reflect pricing power as well as value to customers, and this list measures value held by other owners, not the benefit to customers or the public. The sources are listed under Where every number comes from.
Who's behind this?
An independent, unpaid project. No ads, no sponsors, and no funding from or relationship with any company or person on the list. The author's own stock holdings are disclosed at the bottom of the page. Every input is public and downloadable, so you don't have to trust us: rerun the math yourself. Corrections go to @trillionlist on X.
How does this compare with other lists?
At least two other sites rank founders by value created for others, and they measure it differently. The Anti-Forbes List starts from finance professor Hendrik Bessembinder's measure of wealth created above Treasury-bill returns, attributes it by founding stake, subtracts the founder's current net worth, and refreshes every 15 minutes; it also includes heirs and founders who have left their companies. Wealth Creators subtracts founders' disclosed stakes from company value for 12 founding teams. We differ in two ways: we also subtract book equity, so capital investors paid in or the company kept isn't counted as created, and one published rule decides who is ranked. Each approach has merits. Bessembinder's measure, for example, counts dividends and buybacks paid out over a company's life, which a snapshot like ours does not.
Did these companies pay taxes?
Over their last five reported fiscal years, the 35 ranked companies that disclose it paid $376B in cash income taxes, worldwide and net of refunds. That’s cash actually paid, not the accounting tax expense, and it isn’t only U.S. federal tax. SpaceX and DoorDash don’t report a five-year figure we could verify, so they aren’t included. Each company’s figure and SEC source is in its row.
Is this really "wealth created"?
It's equity market value added: what investors would pay for these companies today, above the book value of shareholders' capital, minus everything the founders hold. Three honest caveats. It reflects expectations about the future, so it moves with the market. It omits value already inside book equity, including retained profits (Berkshire is the extreme case). And a company's value is built with executives, employees and investors; crediting it to the founders who started the company and still serve it is a way of looking at the numbers, not an economic law. Two accounting quirks cut the other way: companies that spend heavily on research expense it rather than booking it as capital, which makes their figure larger, and buybacks shrink book equity over time. Buybacks don't inflate the figure on the day they happen, because the cash paid out lowers market cap and book equity by the same amount.
How do you handle Elon Musk, who runs two companies?
We don’t split his net worth between the two. We charge each company his actual stake from its filings: his SpaceX shares from its IPO prospectus ($895B), and his Tesla shares including options and unvested award shares from his April 2026 filing ($425B). Together that’s $1.32T, more than his $923B Forbes net worth, so his figure comes out lower than if we had used net worth.
Jeff Bezos says he created $2.1 trillion for others. Why does this list show less?
His math was Amazon’s market value minus his own stake. We also subtract the $552B of capital on Amazon’s books, which investors paid in or the company kept from profits, and we charge him his full $368B Forbes net worth instead of just his roughly 8% stake. That leaves $1.76T. Our method is meant to come in under the founders’ own claims.
Shareholders paid for their shares. How is that "created for others"?
They did, and that capital is subtracted. Book equity, the accounting value of what investors paid in plus profits kept, less losses, dividends and buybacks, comes off the top. What's left is value beyond that capital and belongs to the companies' other owners (see "Who exactly are the others?"). Investors who sold along the way took their gains in cash, which this measure doesn't count.
Isn't this just a stock-market bubble?
Market value is what investors will pay today, so it rises and falls. We price everything on one dated close and update every Saturday using Friday's closing prices. If prices fall, the list falls with them, and the founders' own wealth falls just as fast.
Larry Page and Sergey Brin both get $3.0 trillion. Isn't that double-counting?
Co-founders share their company's figure, and each entry says who shares it. The totals at the top count every company once.
Later CEOs built much of this. Why credit the founder?
That is why we rank only founders who are still at the company, and why founders who left, like Bill Gates, appear in a separate unranked section. Founders who are still there kept the company independent and still shape it. Credit goes to the company they started; the list doesn't claim they did it alone.
Some of these people bought a company rather than starting one.
Warren Buffett took over Berkshire Hathaway, a failing textile mill, in 1965. Howard Schultz bought Starbucks when it had 11 stores, the Rales brothers built Danaher from a real estate trust, and Elon Musk joined Tesla as its first major investor. Each built the company that exists today, so we list them as founding operators and apply the same math.
Why is Michael Dell credited with less than he's worth?
Because the rule cuts both ways. His Forbes net worth includes the proceeds from VMware and other holdings, and we subtract all of it from Dell Technologies. A list that only flatters its subjects would not be worth reading.
Why is Warren Buffett's number so modest?
Because Berkshire almost never pays dividends. Sixty years of profit stays inside the company as book equity, and our formula subtracts every dollar of book equity as capital. Shareholders still own that value; this method just doesn't count it as created. Few companies are penalized by this as heavily as Berkshire.
Where is Jeff Bezos's Amazon stake?
Bezos owns about 8% of Amazon, but we subtract his full $371 billion net worth, which is larger.
Why not count the millionaires each founder minted?
No company discloses how many of its employees became millionaires, so any count would be a guess. We show something every company does report instead: the stock it paid employees over the last five fiscal years, as accounting expense at grant-date value. That is not what employees ultimately realized, which can be far more or far less.
Where are Apple, Cisco and AMD?
Their living founders are not on the Forbes billionaires list, or no longer work at the company. Steve Wozniak, for example, is not a billionaire and has had no operating role at Apple since 1985. See who's not here, and why.
